World Sleep Day -5 Ways To Catch More Zs

Today is World Sleep Day – a day set aside to evaluate our own sleep habits and focus on the benefits of a good night’s rest.

We all know that sleep is important and how awful we feel after even one rough night, but in a world where there never seems to be enough hours in the day, how do we make sure that we’re getting the rest we need?

As busy working moms ourselves, we are far too familiar with how it feels to be burning the candle at both ends, so here are our 5 tips for catching more Zs and improving your sleep (and overall) health:

Make Sleep A Priority

1-Make Sleep A Priority! –It’s not news that healthy eating & exercise is crucial for a healthy body, but we often forget that getting adequate sleep is equally, if not more important! Sleep takes time, precious time, so in order to add more sleep, you’re going to need to cut something out. We love to Netflix & chill as much as the next guy, but let’s try cutting it back to 1 episode instead of the usual nightly binge session.

Stick To Your Bedtime

2-Stick To Your Bedtime! Bedtimes aren’t just for kids, having a regular nightly routine where you’re going to bed at the same time helps to prep and cue your body that it’s time for sleep. This practice is especially beneficial if you struggle to fall asleep at night. You’re essentially retraining your body to recognize when it’s time to be awake and when it’s time to be asleep.

3-Turn Off The Screens! –Yes, we did say that you could still watch one episode of your favourite show, but make sure within that last 30 mins-hour before your bedtime all screens are gone. The stimulation of electronics sends a signal to your brain to stay awake instead of helping it to wind down. Try reading or listening to a book instead -this will help your brain to relax and wind down for the night.

Meditate for relaxation

4-Meditate! –You know the drill, you lie down, ready for bed and the thoughts just start racing in, “did I remember to send that email… do the kids have snacks ready for school tomorrow?” etc. Since we’re so busy and often juggling about a million things at once, our brains tend to want to keep going at night. Meditation is a great way to recenter ourselves and stay in the present moment.

Create A Relaxing Space

5-Create A Relaxing Environment! –When it’s time to settle in for the night, if you’re digging your way through piles of clothes & clutter only to stub your toe & then step on your son’s Lego, you’re not going to be in the most restful state. Make it a priority to keep your room clean, tidy & relaxing. -It should be your sanctuary. Invest in some soft & cozy new bed sheets, a scented candle or two & create an environment of rest and relaxation.
